Engaging with an Audi

The Roads Policing Department has been leant a top-of-the-range Audi TTRS by the Audi dealership on Derby Road, Liverpool for two weeks. Each month the Roads Policing Department has a new campaign targeting different aspects of driving.

With November's campaign focusing on roadworthy vehicles as the cold winter weather approaches, officers seized the opportunity to use a new technique to engage with young people and approached the dealership for their help.

Sergeant Paul Mountford, from the Roads Policing Department, said: "We wanted to use a car that would spark a talking point among young drivers and allow us to engage with them on a level that we've not previously done before.

"We will be driving around Merseyside in the Audi for the next two weeks and hoping to speak to as many young people, and other drivers, as possible to get across our messages of road safety and the importance of making sure their cars are roadworthy.

"We will be talking about issues such as tyres, windscreen wipers, lights and brakes as well as making sure that cars are well serviced.

"While it is obviously important that cars are roadworthy all year round, the winter weather adds extra perils to driving and we want to make sure that our messages reach as many people as possible.

"Vehicles that are faulty can cause accidents and ultimately claim lives."

Officers will be handing out literature advising motorists about how to make sure their vehicles are safe and will also be offering to take a look at their vehicles to ensure they are roadworthy.

Sgt Mountford added: "This is the first time we have used a high-tech car to engage with young drivers in this way and would like to thank Audi for giving us this opportunity.

"We hope that it will be very successful and that we can look at doing something similar in the future."
